CRDS Apparatus for Measuring Chemical Reaction Rate Coefficients

Diagram of the experimental apparatus of the laser-photolysis, cavity ring-down, slow-flow reactor.
  • Backflows of inert gas protect the cavity mirrors from pollution. Although the mirror reflectivity still degrades slowly, cleaning restores performance completely.
  • The duration of a ring-down measurement is much shorter than the chemical reaction time.

Flow Reactor Parameters:

  • Time-scale of typical reaction = 0.1-100 milliseconds.
  • Quartz Tube diameter = 16 mm ID.
  • Flow velocity = 1-10 meter/second.
  • Photolysis Laser Beam Length = 50 and 75 mm.
  • Photolysis uniformity = +/-10%.
  • Operational Pressures = 1-25 torr.

CRDS Parameters:

  • Base Ring-down time = 1.8 microseconds.
  • Cavity Length = 1.08 meter.
  • Mirror radius = 1 meter.
  • Typical mirror reflectivity = 99.6%.
