Elemental Composition Standard Reference Materials for Microanalysis

Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) and Reference Materials (RMs) have been developed for quantitative microanalysis with the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), Auger analysis, etc. These standards include binary or ternary metal alloys, synthetic multielement glasses, thin films, and glass microspheres.

Certification of an SRM for microanalysis requires microheterogeneity testing, quantitative analysis of the bulk material, and statistical evaluation of the data to determine the certified concentrations and uncertainties. Tables and information on standards for microanalysis that are available or were available in the past are listed below. References describing the certification process and links to the certificates for these SRMs are in the tables.
