Student Opportunities

NIST offers students employment through:

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) - NIST offers 12-week fellowships for undergraduate students in science and engineering. This intensive, hands-on lab experience is designed to encourage students to pursue doctoral degrees in science and engineering.

The Student Temporary Employment which allows the fulltime, part-time or intermittent appointment of students year round for a period of not-to-exceed one year. Typically these are summer appointments.

The Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) is based on a cooperative educational (work/study) program, that requires 640 hours of work experience. NIST has co-op agreements with more than 90 colleges and universities.

The Student Volunteer Program provides students an opportunity to gain an educational experience in a variety of occupations and receive education credit as well. This assignment requires a formal agreement between the educational institution and NIST.

Each program cited accepts student's from an accredited high school, technical, or vocational school, 2 year or 4 year college or university, graduate or professional school.
