Meeting Overview
The analysis
of microscopic particles represents a measurement challenge in a diverse range
of scientific, technological and environmental disciplines. Examples of areas of interest include
nanoscale particles as building blocks for nanotechnology, contamination in
high technology manufacturing, trace forensic detection for homeland security,
and environmental sampling and monitoring.
Characterization of particle specimens is complicated by mass, volume
and morphological effects that cause well established bulk techniques to break
down. In addition, while the
measurement types under consideration at this workshop are performed on a
particle-by-particle basis, the properties of interest are often statistical
measures of populations of similar particles.
This workshop
will focus on the challenges that face industrial and governmental application
of microscopic particle measurement techniques. The practical tone of the meeting will set by speakers
representing various industries and governmental organizations who will provide
insight into their particle measurement requirements. These speakers will be followed by sessions that focus on
sample preparation and statistical experimental design and established &
emerging measurement techniques.
Instrumentation to be discussed include SEM/EDS, AEM, TOF/SIMS, optical,
FIB and scanned probe. Each of these
sessions will be concluded by a round table discussion in which attendees are
encouraged to contribute.

Registration
Deadline: April
14, 2006
There is no registration fee: the workshop is free to all attendees.
However, space is limited and pre-registration is required by NIST
Security for entry onto the NIST campus. This rule is strictly enforced.
A web form has been implemented to streamline the process. This form is accessible through the Particle
Workshop web page at https://rproxy.nist.gov/CRS/conf_ext.cfm?conf_id=1486. After submitting the form, you will receive
an e-mail confirming your reservation. If
you have any questions or problems registering, please contact:
Nicholas W. M. Ritchie
NIST Microanalysis Research Group
100 Bureau Drive STOP 8371
Gaithersburg, MD 20899-8371
301-975-3929
To complete the web-based registration you will need to provide
the following information: full name,
affiliation/institution, telephone and fax numbers, citizenship status, the
days you plan to attend and (encouraged but optional) a poster title, author
list & abstract.
All attendees are encouraged to present a poster discussing an
interesting facet of their particle analysis work. These posters will be on display for the full duration of the
workshop. In addition, there will
be a poster session on Tuesday. The
poster session is designed to present a realistic snapshot of what participants
in this field are doing and their concerns & challenges. Please plan to present a poster. Submit a title, author list and a short abstract
as a single MS Word or OpenOffice.org Writer document by e-mail to Nicholas
Ritchie at nicholas.ritchie@nist.gov
on or before April 14, 2006. These
abstracts will be made available to all attendees on the workshop record. Authors who wish to have a full digital rendering
of there poster available on the workshop record may submit the poster in
MS Power Point, OpenOffice.org Impress or Adobe PDF format on or before April
14, 2006.
While the registration deadline is 14-Apr-2006, there is a chance
that the available slots will fill before this time. You are encouraged to register early to ensure
a slot. Registration requests will
be taken in the order received with preference given to attendees who submit
a poster abstract. If you need a
letter from the organizing committee to secure travel, or if you want more
information before deciding if you can attend, please contact one of the organizers
listed in this document. We will try to accommodate any special needs or circumstances
if these needs are brought to our attention well before the meeting.
Proposed Schedule
The workshop is scheduled for three full days. Day one and half of day two are devoted to talks from representatives of various industrial users of microscopic particle analysis methods. The second half of day two and day three are devoted to practical technical discussions of current and emerging techniques.

Because registration for the workshop is free, attendees are responsible
for their own meals throughout the week. Light refreshments (cookies, danish, bagels, coffee, tea,…) will
be served before sessions and during some breaks. NIST operates a full-service cafeteria down the hall from the meeting
location, as well as a snack bar and newsstand. There are numerous off-site restaurants
near NIST available to workshop attendees as well.

Location and Driving Directions
The workshop will be held in the Green Auditorium in the
Administration Building on the campus of the National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. All
meeting attendees are responsible for providing their travel to and from NIST,
and for obtaining lodging in Gaithersburg for the duration of the meeting. To
make this as convenient as possible, we provide here maps, directions,
schedules, and pointers to a variety of information that might be useful to
travelers attending the workshop.
NIST is located just off Interstate Route 270, about 25 miles
(40 kilometers) from the center of Washington, D.C. If you wish to use an Internet map service to locate the NIST
campus, you might need the street address of NIST:
100 Bureau Drive
Gaithersburg, MD 20899
From northbound I-270 take Exit 10, Route 117 West, Clopper
Road. At the first light on Clopper Road, turn left onto the NIST grounds.
From southbound I-270 take Exit 11, MD Route 124, Montgomery
Village Avenue/Quince Orchard Road. Bear right at the traffic light at the end
of the off-ramp onto MD Route 124 West, Quince Orchard Road. At the second

collector/distributor lanes several hundred yards prior to the exit
itself. Merge onto Clopper Road at the
end of the off-ramp and pass under I-270.
At first stop light, (Bureau Dr.) turn left into the main NIST entrance.
When leaving the airport, take I-195 West. On I-195W take the
I-95 South Exit #4B toward Washington DC. Take the I-495 West Exit #27-25
toward College Park/Silver Spring, MD. Take the I-270 North Exit #35 toward
Frederick, MD. Take I-270 North (local
lanes) toward Montrose Road. Take Exit #10 off I-270 toward Clopper Road (MD
117) and Quince Orchard Rd (MD 124). Note that these exits are right exits, and
exit from the collector/distributor lanes off the Interstate. Be aware of the
signs directing you to enter the collector/distributor lanes several hundred
yards prior to the exit itself. Merge
onto Clopper Road at the end of the off-ramp and pass under I-270. At first stop light, (Bureau Dr.) turn left
into the main NIST entrance.
Exit National Airport by heading north on the George Washington
(GW) Parkway toward Maryland. Take the GW Parkway to I-495 North toward
Maryland. At the lane divide, keep left and exit I-495 to take I-270 North
toward Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Frederick. Take I-270 North (local lanes)
toward Montrose Road. Take Exit #10 off I-270 toward Clopper Road (MD 117) and
Quince Orchard Rd (MD 124).
Metro Access to NIST
(Subway)
NIST is accessible via the Washington Metro system. NIST is
closest to the last stop on the Red Line (Shady Grove station), but it is a
ten-minute drive from the Shady Grove station to the NIST campus. NIST provides shuttle service for official
visitors and staff to and from the Shady Grove Metro Station. Visitors using
Metro can meet the NIST shuttle at the east side "Kiss & Ride"
area of the Shady Grove Metro Station at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour from
8:00 am to 5:30 pm. The shuttle departs from the front of the NIST
Administration Building on the hour and half hour, and stops at NIST North four
minutes later on the way to the Metro station.
