One of the fundamental tenets of open source software is that many eyes make for better software. Even when the developer is careful, errors (both minor and major) inevitably will sneak into a software product. Developers are likely to test a package the way they intended it to work and are likely to miss many bugs as a result. As more people use a package, more bugs are discovered and eventually corrected. In time with bug reports and suggestions from users the product becomes more robust, reliable and trusted.
As computers become faster Monte Carlo simulation becomes more viable as a day-to-day tool for microanalysis. If as a community we can make NISTMonte sufficiently robust and reliable, we can adapt and extend it rather than reinvent the Monte Carlo wheel each time we need a subtle variant on the standard simulation. Hopefully this will leave us with more time to focus on new science.
