PRECISION THERMOMETRY WORKSHOP GENERAL INFORMATION

Thermometry Workshop Description

A Precision Thermometry Workshops are scheduled to be given at the NIST laboratories on March 15-19, 2004.

The Precision Thermometry Workshop is one of several NIST activities that provide advice and assistance for measurement and calibration problems, covering the measurement standards and methods needed for research work, factory production, or field evaluation.

The workshop provides instruction in resistance thermometry (including platinum, thermistor, rhodium-iron, and germanium resistance thermometry), liquid-in-glass thermometry, thermocouple thermometry, vapor pressure gas thermometry, thin-film thermometry, and an overview of radiation thermometry (including optical fiber thermometry). Material to be covered includes the International Temperature Scale of 1990 and its use in the laboratory; thermometers and instrumentation, including automatic data acquisition; the treatment of calibration data; uncertainties in thermometer calibrations and temperature measurements; and innovations in thermometry.

Time will be split between lecture and laboratory sessions. The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Lectures will conclude by 12 noon on Friday, followed by open house tours of various laboratories.

Audience

The workshop is intended for calibration laboratory personnel and others who wish to undertake precision temperature measurements. Applicants should possess undergraduate training in physics or engineering and should have some laboratory experience in metrology. Participation is limited to 16 persons per workshop on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Participants should bring a calculator.

Cost

Registration fee is $1,110 per participant, per workshop and includes coffee breaks, lunches and workshop materials. The registration fee must be prepaid in order to guarantee your participation in the workshop. In the case of cancellation, the fee will be refunded only if a replacement is found, or if the cancellation notice is received at least 30 days prior to the workshop.

Location

National Institute of Standards and Technology
Gaithersburg, Maryland

The workshops will be held in the Administration Bldg. (101), Lecture Room E.
