Postdoctoral Opportunities

Postdoctoral Research Associateships are available in 1999 to qualified people for research in the Process Sensing Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The positions are awarded on a competitive basis by the National Research Council (NRC). The NRC-NIST postdoctoral program is open only to U. S. citizens. Each applicant must submit an original research proposal related to a specific research opportunity at NIST that is compatible with the advisor's interests. Chemical sensing research projects in the Process Sensing Group include:

Technical capabilities available in the group include STM, XPS, FT-IR, thin film deposition, electrochemical, ellipsometry, SEM, and contact angle instrumentation. Other analytical techniques accessible at NIST through collaboration with other groups include SIMS imaging, surface-enhanced Raman, and x-ray diffraction. Experience in the areas of chemical sensing, bioanalytical chemistry, electrochemistry, or surface science is desirable, but not necessary.

The NRC-NIST Postdoctoral Program places successful applicants in a campus-like setting at a government laboratory located 20 miles from Washington, D.C. The annual base salary for a NIST Associate is $45,500 with an additional $5,500 provided for travel and professional activities. The application deadline for the 1999 program is January 15, 1999.
