This workshop is sponsored by the National
Institute of Standards & Technology, (NIST),
a non-regulatory agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST develops
and promotes measurements, standards, and technology to enhance productivity,
facilitate trade, and improve the quality of life. The goal of this
workshop is to define the need for standardization of the biological
component of RNA based molecular assays, specifically; microarray and
quantitative RT-PCR gene expression technologies. Parameters important to reduce intra-laboratory and inter-laboratory
variability and normalize gene expression data will be addressed. A
consensus will be sought from all meeting participants on how broadly
applied standardized material(s) could be used for inter-laboratory
comparison as well as data comparisons between platforms.
It is intended that this workshop will provide guidance to all parties
developing, validating and/or regulating the use of these technologies.
