Currently it is not possible to identify all expressed proteins in a
sample. The limits of detection are not sufficient for identification
and quantification because some proteins have low copy number or some
methods miss particular subsets of the proteome. As a result, the
scientific community focuses on the currently detectable subset of the
proteome. Some efforts focus on identifying and quantifying proteins,
whereas others focus on identifying disease biomarkers.
In an effort to address the greatly varying needs,
platforms and capabilities of the proteomics community, we are
developing standardized tools that enable precise measurements to
assess the limitations of the platforms and methods, and to accurately
compare results from different methods, platforms and laboratories.
